A Harvard alumnus, J. Randall “Randy” Waterfield serves as chairman of the Waterfield Group based in New York City. J. Randall Waterfield, through Waterfield Holdings and partner Environmental Operations, Inc., established Missouri Cobalt, LCC, and acquired a former mining operation of Anschutz Mining Corporation in April 2018.
The mining operation encompasses 1,800 acres in Madison County, Missouri. A former lead mine, it is being converted into a cobalt mine. The site is estimated to contain recoverable cobalt amounting to 35 million pounds, making it likely the largest cobalt reserve in North America. In 2017, the demand for cobalt reached $8 billion, and it is increasing. Cobalt is an integral component in lithium-ion batteries that energize electric cars, smartphones, and other critical technologies, and it's also used in medical devices and jet engines.
Government officials understand its importance in today’s economy and view the mineral as critical to the country’s long-term security and viability. To help ensure that the US would have reliable sources of cobalt, President Donald Trump promulgated an executive order to encourage the domestic production of cobalt and other critical minerals. Officials view Missouri Cobalt as an important component in attaining this goal.
